Multipurpose Pavilion, Eduardo Souto de Moura, 2013

Viana do Castelo Pavilion is located in the mouth of the Lima River, where a new cultural backbone is being created among in the Minho area. According to that issue, the building is not part of the urban grid; rather it is located in an edge of urban growth boundary that faces the river instead. Along with a library by Alvaro Siza and a leisure centre by Fernando Távora, the riverfront is being brought back into use.


The plan of the building is square. whereas The section illustrates a sparkling striking spatial hierarchy dominated by an open up space in the middle of the building.  

The structural strategy of huge columns in the perimeter and an impressive metallic truss allows an interior spam of 45 meters
Souto de Moura's structural strategy of massive columns, arranged at the corners of a platform around a sunken sports hall, and steel trusses eliminates the need for supporting columns across the interior span of 45 metres. The result is vast, unencumbered flexible space.
 

Each program has it zone in the building, arranged so that the interfaces create new programmatic opportunities where different actions such as sports, cultural or musical events can take place. The vertical layering of the building starts with a base below the entrance that holds houses the playing court and the lateral tiers tiered seating. The middle layer, or entrance level, contains an ¿ambulatory? (circulation space?) area around the tiers below that faces towards the main central space. Finally, the top layer contains the control booths and the management services.



The ground floor industrial glazing allows the light filter through the façade and lead draws one inside the building. The transparent appearance of this level make a counterpoint with the levels above where the air-conditioning services is are left exposed. At the same time, the materials used in the outside, aluminium and glass contrast with the different size planks of wood and minimal style used in the inside.

There is nothing wrong with the third paragraph, but your language reminded me of Biblioteque Nationale and the Pompidou Centre so I used those descriptions to suggest how you could take the description further.
