The Munkegards School project was destined to become a global benchmark in the field of school architectonic type: “the mat typology”


The courtyard plan demonstrates how integral nature and light are to Jacobsen’s work.





Five parallel corridors are combined to give admission to crossing bands of classrooms in three single-story buildings. It is entered from a courtyard at the southern edge of the site. The classrooms looks south through full-height windows over its own little courtyard and further the light is provided by a clerestory in the split-pitched roof. The use of big windows and transparency leads one up to an open sky.

The school has a grid plan. The single storey  classrooms are arranged in three rows of nine and are accessed by five perpendicular corridors. The classrooms look south through full-height windows over their own little courtyard. Further light is provided in the factory light roof. Only here the saw-tooth clerestory faces south, providing teaching spaces flooded with light.

 




The school is built with brick walls. in which The sloping (or mono-pitched) decks contrast with the flat roof of the lower corridors creating a powerful visual tension.





The new extension was designed to embrace interaction and diversity, through the adaptability and flexibility of the learning spaces.

  1. Carlota, I don't know why I'm surprised you chose this building but I am. If you visit Oxford you ought to go to Saint Catherine's college, it's quite beautiful and has many similarities to this project which made it particularly interesting to me,

    I think you've described this school excellently, and you can see that there is no green which means no mistakes. I have suggested things, as it is a difficult building to describe. But it's interesting to see how the description of the panels of the Maison du Verre can be used to describe the plan of this building. Don't be afraid to take your writing further and express some poetic ideas about how you see the children using these spaces.
