Tuna Gastronomic Centre, Zahara de los Atunes

Zahara de los Atunes in the south of Spain is famous for its beaches and fish. The town is considered to have its origin in the building known as Palacio de Pilas or Casa Chanca.

The once famous building had been lost in time and was sloopy ¿derelict?. The decision was made to revive the zone. Recently added constructions were demolished and the structure of the architectural ensemble was recovered.

To embrace the beautiful setting a kind of courtyard building is proposed. A pergola greets you as you arrive, takes you past a space for information to the entrance of the centre, before leading off into the museum and lately gastronomic area.

The proposal was a hybrid project – a mixture of museum, kitchen cookery school and restaurant. The northwest tower was rehabilitate restored to hold house a viewpoint viewing platform of the bay, the captain's house was brought back into use as part of the museum area and two new buildings were reinstated to hold lecture rooms and the restaurant. Besides, the old wood warehouse was remodel to hold the kitchens.

The regeneration of the area also involved the preservation of the stretches of the wall remaining and a proposal of a public space for leisure that opens up to the beach.

  1. Isabel, this description makes excellent use of the language of the course. It was a pleasure to read.

Sloppy means all over the place, but it's for behaviour rather than things. I chose the word 'derelict' as it works here although it doesn't mean the same. 'The arrangement of buildings lacked focus' might be a way of expressing what you wanted to say.

    Well done!
